Observant zombie fans may have noticed some zombie-related Easter Eggs in the latest DLC for Left 4 Dead 2, "The Passing"
"The Passing," released yesterday, gives players the thrill of seeing the Left 4 Dead 2 cast interact with the classic team from the first Left 4 Dead. In the second level of "The Passing," you find yourself in a room with a pool table. Zombie fanatics probably won't help but notice that the graffiti on the wall is full of references to other zombie films and video games.
Otis,
Out of film, no helicopter. Zombies are too fast. Not going to make it.
Frank West
Frank West is the hero character of Capcom's Dead Rising game. West spends the whole game fending off zombies in a mall while waiting for
EDIT: Otis, as reader Paul correctly puts it, "was the janitor that wouldn't shut the hell up over the radio"
Went to save my dog. If I'm not back in fifteen minutes everyone drop everything and come save me
Nicole
A reference to the character of Nicole in Zack Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead and the completely ridiculous scenario that sees Nicole crash a delivery truck into the gun store while trying to save her dog, Chips.
Ed is King of the Zombies
I'm pretty sure this is a reference to Shaun of the Dead in which Ed asks Shaun, "Who died and made you fucking king of the zombies?"
REPENT. THE END IS EXTREMELY FUCKING NIGH
Reference to wall graffiti seen in 28 Days Later
Roger
Went to mall
Francine
Roger and Francine are both characters in Romero's original Dawn of the Dead
Looking for an M60? Come see me.
Crazy Dave
Crazy Dave is a character in PopCap Games' highly popular Plants vs. Zombies . In the game, Crazy Dave sells you items to help keep the zombies off your lawn.

Otis wasn't the helicopter pilot in Dead Rising, he was the janitor that wouldn't shut the hell up over the radio.
ReplyDeleteShit, you're right Paul. Ed was the helicopter pilot. You'd think after how annoying Otis was in that game I would try to forget about him, but there he is popping up in my typos too.
ReplyDeleteYou win a fabulous Zed Word No-Prize.
Your guess that Roger and Francine is from the original Dawn of the Dead is probably correct.
ReplyDeleteBut when I read the two names and what was written I couldn't help but think of Roger and Francine from American Dad.
I'm so glad they finally paid tribute to the graffiti in 28 Days Later. I always thought that the idea of having graffiti all over the place was due to the "Repent, the End is extremely fucking nigh" in 28 days later.
ReplyDeleteYes roger and francine are in american dad . Roger is alien and Francine is Stans wife
ReplyDeleteThe rescue dog scene is NOT ridiculous. Have you seen some people with thier pets? They spend more time and money on them than kids. Its like they are more important to them than thier own life.

Just because some people would pull that kind of ridiculous shit doesn't make it any less ridiculous. And to be fair the dog was the replacement companion to her because her dad got wasted by the people she was hanging out with. She wasnt saving a dog so much as saving her surrogate family member cause she couldnt save her father.
ReplyDeleteI think.
I'll be the first one to say that I'd probably do something stupid on a subjective level to save my cats during the zombie apocalypse, but on an objective level Nicole still acts ridiculously. Especially when it's quite apparent that the zombies don't give a crap about her dog.
ReplyDeleteTrue dat. I was just expaining what i think the film makers motivations for the ridiculous scene in question were.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I would definitely save at least my smart cat. Pretty sure he would just follow me around in the event of the apocalypse. Iv'e given this some thought.... lol.
Crazy Dave - not just great when the zombies are eating your plants, but also good when they get bored and attack you!
ReplyDeleteLet us don't forget that the caption "End of the world or not, there are STANDARTS" is a refference to the motto of the Sniper from Team Fortress 2 (Proffesionals have STANDARTS") :D
ReplyDeleteAh-ha! I've never played Team Fortress 2, so I didn't catch that.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if the other bit of graffiti -- "There's not need for that kind of language / I have to agree too much" -- is a reference to anything. It feels familiar but I can't place it.
Actually in the room next door there is a toilet, with some words about 'Even though it's the end of the world, you people could still take 10 seconds to flush!' or something similar.
ReplyDeleteWas thinking this might be a reference to Zombieland, when the character Talahasee says 'Best thing about Zombieland? No need to flush.'. Maybe this is reading too much into it though.
oh come on, Otis wasnt that bad.. blame the stupid game system for forcing him to call every 2mins. hell maybe he wanted to make sure he was ok.
ReplyDeleteI thought maybe the "Ed is king of the zombies" one might be Ed from Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy. It sounds like something he would say. Anyone else think so?
ReplyDeleteAlso the names from Francine and Roger, could be taken from the animated television show American Dad by Seth Mcfarlane. As they are both character names and judging on personalities I would not be surprised
ReplyDeleteAgain, I doubt the names "Roger" and "Francine" are intended to reference American Dad. When the whole room is full of quotes from zombie movies, a random reference to American Dad would seem out of place. In terms of zombie movies, Roger and Francine from Dawn of the Dead seem more thematic.
ReplyDelete"Ed is King of the Zombies" seems it may be refering to Ed Thurlow from terror4fun.com. Bizarre Magazine named him that.
